Music Theory
Understanding the language of music
Music theory is the framework underneath everything we play.
But I don't believe it should be something that sits separately from learning an instrument. The most useful theory is the theory you can hear, recognise and use.
Theory without the overwhelm
You've reached Grade 5 on your instrument but you've never really learned music theory, and now you need it to progress further.
Don't worry. You're not the first, and you don't need to work it all out on your own.
I offer a structured programme from beginner through to Grade 5 theory, filling in the gaps and building your understanding step by step. We'll work at your pace, so you properly understand what you're learning rather than simply memorising things for an exam.
No fixed timeframe. No unnecessary pressure. Just a clear route from where you are now to where you need to be.
Find the right level for you
-
Build your theory foundations from the beginning and work progressively through Grades 1–5. Particularly suited to instrumentalists and singers who have reached Grade 5 on their instrument and now need theory to progress.
-
Develop the theoretical and analytical skills needed for GCSE and A Level Music, with lessons tailored to your course, exam board and individual needs.
-
For students working towards Grade 8, diploma or degree-level study, with a deeper focus on harmony, analysis, counterpoint, figured bass and composition requirements.
Theory that connects to playing
Music theory shouldn't exist separately from the music itself. What you learn in a theory lesson should help you understand, hear and make sense of the music you are learning, whatever instrument you play.
We might explore chords, harmony, rhythm, structure or tonality and relate them directly to the music you are studying, so that theory becomes something you can recognise, understand and use, rather than simply memorise.
The knowledge and vocabulary you develop with me can be applied directly to your own instrument, because theory is ultimately about understanding music itself, not learning a particular instrument.
