Online Piano Lessons

Excellent piano teaching, wherever you are

You don't need to live in South Yorkshire to have lessons with me.

I teach pupils throughout the UK and internationally online, from young musicians beginning their piano journey through to advanced students preparing for examinations, performances and other musical goals.

Personalised teaching · Professional expertise · Lessons built around you

Can piano really be taught online?

Yes, very effectively.

A good piano lesson is about listening, watching, explaining, demonstrating and helping a student understand how to improve. Modern video calling makes it possible to do all of those things very well, without needing to be in the same room.

In fact, one of the things I particularly like about online teaching is that it can work with students who I would never otherwise have the opportunity to teach.

The teaching is still personal. The only difference is that we aren't in the same room.

Who are online lessons for?

Young musicians

Online lessons can work particularly well for children and teenagers who are motivated to learn and have a suitable piano or keyboard at home.

Adults

Perhaps you've always wanted to learn, or you played years ago and would like to return to the piano.

Online lessons remove the need to travel and can fit particularly well around work and family commitments.

If you're returning after a long break, you may also be interested in Pause to Play, my programme for adults reconnecting with the piano.

Advanced students

I also work with more advanced pianists who want detailed help with repertoire, interpretation, performance preparation or examination work.

Online lessons can be particularly useful when you need an experienced second pair of ears to help you identify what is holding your playing back.

What do I need?

You'll need a piano or suitable keyboard, a reliable internet connection, and a device that allows us to see and hear each other clearly.

I'll help you work out the best setup for your instrument and circumstances before we begin.

You don't need an expensive studio or complicated equipment.

Real pupils, real progress

I currently teach pupils online at a range of ages and levels, including students working towards advanced performance qualifications.

One of the things I particularly enjoy about online teaching is being able to work with students who live well beyond my local area and seeing them develop over time into increasingly confident and independent musicians.

“Matthew has been teaching both of my daughters online and has been a wonderful influence on their musical journey. He is patient, encouraging and always brings such a positive approach to their lessons. My younger daughter achieved a Merit in her Grade 6 piano exam, and both of my daughters, now aged 14 and 11, are working towards Grade 8.
What I value most is that Matthew has helped them enjoy music for its own sake, not just as something to practise for an exam. Their confidence has grown, they enjoy playing, and music has become a lovely part of their everyday lives.”
