Individual music tuition for students who want to progress
Developing musicianship, independence and confidence through personalised teaching from beginner to advanced level.
Piano - Organ - Music Theory - Performance
I work with a limited number of students, tailoring lessons to the individual rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

More than learning an instrument
The most valuable thing music can teach us goes far beyond learning an instrument.
My pupils learn technique, musicianship, repertoire and how to perform. However alongside those things, I want them to discover what it feels like to commit to something, work through the difficult bits and eventually achieve something that once seemed beyond them.
For younger students especially, I see music as an opportunity to develop habits and qualities that reach far beyond the lesson room: perseverance, independence, curiosity, self discipline and the confidence that comes from knowing, “I couldn't do this before, but I persisted and now I can.”
I want to provide pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence to gradually become their own musicians who are able to practise intelligently, solve problems, make musical decisions and ultimately take responsibility for their own development.
The aim isn't simply to get through the next grade.
It's to help each student discover what they are capable of, and give them the tools to keep going long after they leave my teaching.
“I am delighted to share our experience with Matthew, who has been a remarkable piano teacher for my daughter. She started learning under Matthew at the age of 5, and thanks to the inspiring and nurturing environment he provides, she has blossomed into a talented young musician. At just 10 years old, my daughter is already working towards her Grade 8 piano exam, an achievement that speaks volumes about the quality of instruction she has received. Matthew has not only taught her the technical skills needed to succeed but has also instilled in her a deep love for music. His passion and dedication is truly inspiring, making every lesson a delightful experience. We couldn't be happier with our journey and highly recommend Matthew to any aspiring pianist!"

About Matthew
With more than twenty years of teaching experience, I combine professional performance experience with a deep interest in how individual students learn.
My musical career has included work as a pianist, organist and professional singer, including training at Birmingham Conservatoire and Guildhall School of Music & Drama and professional work with Glyndebourne and other opera companies.
I currently work as an organist and musician alongside my teaching, and hold the ARCO diploma of the Royal College of Organists.
I work with a small number of committed pupils across a wide range of ages and abilities.
This includes beginners taking their first steps at the piano, young musicians working towards advanced examinations and performances, adults returning to music after many years away, and students looking to develop their musicianship beyond the requirements of a syllabus.
I don't aim to teach as many pupils as possible.
I want to give each student the attention, care and individual approach that allows them to make meaningful progress.
“He is incredibly knowledgeable, his enthusiasm and love of music is contagious, and most importantly, he is human!”
